Artists given the opportunity have a residency in an empty shop and to carry out a workshop with a Luton Artists Group.

Space 18

Space 18 is a project to give emerging Artists an Artist in Residence opportunity to develop their practice.

In 2016 and 2017 artists used empty shop space in High Town, Luton but this year the artists have the opportunity to use a town centre location, Storefront in Bute Street for discussion, research, networking, production and exhibition.

Over the month 5 Luton artists will take over Storefront with a series of exhibitions and workshops for the local community, find out more about the artists and their projects below:

Sisters Fiona Martin and Elaine Lister explore and preserve memories of their father, artist Fran Martin, through painting assemblages, photograph and film.

‘Memory & Memorial’ art workshop Saturday 18 August 1-3pm.

  • Thu 23 – Sat 25 August – Anna Fairchild, Virtual Shift.

Anna Fairchild is a final year Professional Doctorate student and lecturer in Art and Photography. As part of her exhibition, Anna Fairchild will be offering a film and plaster sculpture workshop on Saturday 25 August, 11am – 12.30pm

  • Thu 30 August – Sat 1 September – Haleema Ali, A Life in Chains – Shackles of the Mind, Body and Soul.

Haleema Ali is an activist, who hopes to inspire social change through events, art and workshops. Her exhibition is about human rights: A Life in Chains – Shackles of the Mind, Body and Soul. An artistic representation of how corrupt political and justice systems can lead to the physical and mental imprisonment of the oppressed in our society. She will be creating a human wire sculpture with human rights quotes and there will be a workshop discussing work and the issues 1100 on Saturday 1st September in Storefront.   • Thu 6 – Sat 8 September – Abu Yahya, The journey of The Light.

An exhibition of Islamic illustration. Abu Yahya is a self taught calligraphy Artist from Luton. He will be showing exhibiting his Arabic Caligraphy Artwork and will be carrying out a workshop on the Saturday 8th at 1100-1230
